Hustling between
mundane Monday errands,
I squeeze in a flu shot.
Time will tell
how protective
its value,
how worth it
not sleeping
on my left side
for one night
to spare
my achy arm
will prove.
Delirious
with attenuated viruses,
my thoughts conjure
an analogy:
As a vaccine
is to the immune system,
is not literacy
to the mind?
YES!!! Literacy is like an immunization for the mind. What a great analogy! (And thanks for reminding me that I'm due for my flu shot too!)

Such a fun poem! A flu shot is a must for every teacher, which reminds me...
ReplyDeleteI hope so... :) Thanks for the reminder Brian.
ReplyDeleteNice analogy. So what do we do about the non-immunizers? :)
ReplyDeleteI've avoided flu shots for years. Your last stanza has me thinking I should rethink my adamant stand.
ReplyDeleteI figure it's like making Pascal's wager.
DeleteEnjoyed your poem and its analogy but I confess I am in the non-immunization camp.
ReplyDeleteLove your weekly slices and you were almost first today!! Cool analogy of literacy being a vaccine for the mind, protecting us against the ignorance that would sicken us!
ReplyDeleteLike actual flu shoots, literacy isn't 100% effective. I still like its chances, given limited alternatives.
