Outside, it was raining steadily, lightly.
"You like this kind of weather?" the bus driver asked the boy.
Conditioned by my experiences working with middle-schoolers, I braced for the boy's mumbled one-word answer. What he said instead was, "I do, yes, but sitting out in it isn't all that pleasant. I like the dreariness of it."
Oh how I love this. I hope that my newly-minted 10-year-old will someday provide such an amazing response. Excellent
ReplyDeleteMakes you want to hear more. I love to be surprised.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is a perfect slice! I love reading these observations, especially about sometimes liking the dreariness!
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I, too love listening in on student conversations They say the best things! Two weeks ago, I heard a boy confess to his book club that he'd finished the book ahead of schedule because is was such a rainy weekend he stayed in his pjs and read all day.
ReplyDeleteOh, he sounds like an interesting soul. Your comment about one-word responses from middle schoolers made me laugh. I'm sure the same is true, maybe even more so, for high schoolers! I actually was surprised by the bus driver's question more than anything!
ReplyDeleteEavesdropping on random conversations is a favorite pass-time of mine when I am in public. The one you had the privilege of over hearing was indeed remarkable. Most of the time I am disappointed in young adults addressing elders but sometimes,,,,I hear the most wonderful things. What a wonderful slice you were blessed to hear.
